Tomato pachadi


This tangy and spicy dish goes with chapathi, dosa and idly. Its easy to make and and can be done in minutes.


Onion :                           1 (big)
Tomato :                         5 (medium)
Green chilli :                  2
Chilli powder :               1 tsp
Turmeric powder :          1/2 tsp
Garlic pods :                   5 (crushed)
Fresh coriander leaves :  to garnish
Salt :                                to taste


Oil :                                1 tbsp
Mustard seeds :              1 tsp
Fennel seeds :                1 tsp
Cinnamon :                    1 small piece
Curry leaf :                     few

  • Heat oil in a pan and add the given temper ingredients.
  • Add the green chillies and garlic. Fry for few seconds.
  • Now add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and fry until its completely smashed.
  • Now add the given spice powders, salt and add enough water (I added almost 1/2 a cup). Mix well.
  • Simmer the flame and close with a lid. Let it cook until it gets a dry masala consistency.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

  • You can add salt right after adding tomatoes so that it gets cooked quickly.
  • You can adjust the water level if you want it a little watery.
